TACKLING COMMON INSTALLATION CHALLENGES WITH BABY GATES
CRUCIAL INSTALLATION WARNING
Undertaking these installations requires significant expertise; attempting this task without the assistance of a professional could lead to potential risks and unforeseen expenses.
By reading this article, you affirm that you have understood and agreed to the terms and conditions specified here: Website Terms & Conditions.
The following scenarios highlight various challenges I have encountered during installations, which may resonate with your own experiences and offer beneficial solutions.
INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 1: DEALING WITH UNEVEN SURFACES
ADDRESSING THE ISSUE OF UNEVEN SURFACES

-
- Measure the widest point at the top to determine the necessary size for the gate and any required extensions. (CLICK HERE FOR MEASURING GUIDELINES).
- Once you have the gates/extensions, use an angle grinder equipped with a metal/aluminium disc to accurately cut the gate, adhering to the measurements shown in the reference images above.
- Remove the plastic component from the section you wish to cut out and insert it into the modified part of the gate to ensure the tension knob fits correctly.
- This process will become clearer once you have the gate on hand.
INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 2: MOUNTING ON AN ANGLED WALL
RESOLVING THE ISSUE OF INSTALLING ON AN ANGLED WALL

-
- Ensure the gate/extensions are ready for installation.
- Use Pratley Putty Quickset to fill any gaps and create a level surface on the wall.
- Allow the Putty to cure completely BEFORE tightening the tension knobs to securely attach the gate using pressure.
- Do not rely on the gate for safety until all procedures are complete and the gate has been tested for stability.
INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 3: INSTALLING BABY GATES OUTDOORS
NAVIGATING THE CHALLENGE OF OUTDOOR BABY GATE INSTALLATION
While installing baby gates outdoors can be a quick and economical solution, it may also void the warranty on these gates.

I recommend considering outdoor installations of baby gates as a temporary and budget-friendly option. This may risk voiding your warranty on the gates.
-
- Baby gates are primarily designed for indoor use and may not withstand outdoor elements due to exposure to harsh weather conditions.
- This limitation is explicitly detailed in the warranty documentation that accompanies the product.
- Failure to adhere to warranty conditions will lead to the loss of warranty coverage.
For a more durable solution, consider hiring a contractor who specialises in security or latch gates. Although this may incur higher costs, it is the most effective strategy.
PREPARING THE BABY GATE AND EXTENSIONS FOR OUTDOOR USE:
Disclaimer: None of these measures ensure complete rust protection; however, they aim to extend the lifespan of the gate in South African climatic conditions.
Regular treatment every 1-2 months can significantly lower the risk of rust.
To reduce rust and moisture accumulation, follow these guidelines:
-
- Before installation, treat the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit, ensuring to cover surface areas at the base as well.
- Drill holes at the bottom of the gate using an 8mm steel drill bit. This will facilitate drainage of water and prevent rust from forming inside the hollow gate, where moisture may collect at joints, connectors, and tension knobs. The holes will provide ventilation to avert moisture build-up.
- Apply a light coating of Rustoleum Painters Touch 2X Ultra Cover – Satin Clear 340g, available at takealot.com, to the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit.
- Allow to dry completely (approximately 2 hours), then apply a second coat.
For existing rust:
-
- Spray the affected areas with Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer 291g, following the product guidelines.
- Refer to the product description on takealot.com; you may need to acquire mineral spirits to clean any overspray on non-rusted areas.
- The rust reformer will convert rust to a black colour, which should then be coated with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Enamel Gloss White 340g, available on takealot.com.
