French Drain Solutions: Manage Runoff Effectively in Shellharbour

Resolving Water Ingress Challenges in Shellharbour

A homeowner in Shellharbour encountered a serious and worsening problem with water ingress. Rainwater from two adjacent properties, positioned at a higher elevation, began to flow into the garden and seep beneath the foundation of the house. This unwanted water intrusion caused damage to the flooring, promoted rising damp, and led to mould growth inside the property, jeopardising the integrity of recent renovations.

How Do You Determine the Cause of Water Ingress?

The issue originated from both surface runoff and subsurface water travelling downhill from the back and side gardens of neighbouring properties. Without an effective drainage system to intercept this water, it was forced to flow underneath the house.

Designing an Effective Drainage Solution

CS Plumbing engineered and installed a gravity-fed French drain system specifically designed to capture and redirect water before it could reach the home’s foundation.

The project encompassed several crucial components:

  • A French drain system thoughtfully designed to gather surface and subsurface water from neighbouring properties, directing it through gravity to a concrete pit.
  • A 100mm PVC pipe extending from the pit to the curb, equipped with strategically drilled holes to facilitate efficient water discharge.
  • Three new, larger-diameter Colorbond metal downpipes replacing the original smaller pipes, connected to new 100mm PVC piping leading to the curb.
  • A retaining wall system constructed along the boundary, made from concrete sleepers and galvanised steel posts, with auger holes drilled using an excavator to create a robust barrier to retain the adjacent yard.
  • Efficient soil removal on-site, managed by a dumper for smooth site organisation.

What Strategies Should You Employ for Efficient Water Management?

The newly established drainage system now efficiently collects both surface and subsurface water at the property boundary, ensuring it is diverted away from the home. This solution offers the homeowner a durable, low-maintenance option that protects their foundation, flooring, and the significant investments made in renovations.
